[ This letter is very similar to Astarion's if only because Xenk only has one way of saying things... and also he wrote two letters. ]
Dearest Fenris,
This past month I have been wracked with a multitude of thoughts following certain actions that the Paladins have taken in Elah, specifically regarding their study into the cursed gravestone that was the cause of so many of my ills only a few weeks ago. This, combined with rumors and indeed my own personal encounter with rogue Paladins who have been enacting cruel and unneeded punishments in the city have left me at a loss.
My complaints as to both instances have been met with silence, and claims that "bureaucracy" make it too difficult for the Paladins to properly monitor and ensure that only justice is served in their name. I cannot support a corrupt system that claims to promote justice and order, yet would turn a blind eye on the concerns of its members and leave innocent people to die simply because they do not share their affiliation.
I believe it better to cast such false justice aside, than continue to abide by cruel systems. I am thus planning to start my own group, or "crew," in hopes of gaining greater independence from the Paladins who would create such unjust systems. This should also afford me the ability to maintain my Oath without contributing to their numbers.
Would you be willing to join me in this endeavor? I understand that as a Corsair, justice and righteousness may not hold much allure, but crews are not bound by the rules of a single armada and are afforded a level of independence that surpasses that of the Armadas themselves. I ask this of you because I value your opinion greatly, and believe that freedom is integral to your values.
My thanks for your consideration, and I hope to hear your reply when you are able.
[There's a long time after getting the letter that Fenris tries to read it. He's not completely illiterate, Hawke did spend some time teaching him, but he was usually too busy for much in the way of books and teaching Fenris. But Xenk's flourishy handwriting and penchant for words that are beyond his literate vocabulary leaves him at a loss for what the man is trying to convey.
So, instead he finds the time to hunt down the other man. It was a letter afterall, he knows well enough that Xenk likely means it to be a private matter and so Fenris knows no one better to go to for help in reading the letter than the sender himself.
It takes most of the day, but eventually he does find Xenk and catches up with the man when he does.]
Xenk, if you have a moment to speak privately, I would be most grateful.
[The letter is folded in hand, his other moving to take Xenk's in his own.]
[ Poor Xenk and his overly-flowy handwriting and his extra everything, he has no clue he's made this very hard for Fenris. He's happy to greet Fenris when he sees him, and happier still to have a moment alone with him. ]
Ah, Fenris. How lovely to see you. Of course!
[ He nods, taking Fenris' hand and following. Was this about the letter? He hopes he didn't offend Fenris with the offer, though he'll wait till they're in private before asking, since Fenris seems quite intent on seeking privacy. ]
[Fenris doesn't look offended, but he looks like his normal broody self, with a cat on his shoulder that looks pleased as punch to be there. She kind of gives Xenk a once over.]
Do not mind my creature, she does not see fit to leave me alone since I was burdened with her.
[He sounds grumpy, but he's also careful not to jostle or disrupt the cat in anyway.
Walking, he turns down an alleyway, looking for spot that is mostly empty and quiet. It wasn't as if they were on Nogard where he could bring the man to his apartment. So an empty end of an alleyway would do well enough.]
Not at all. I am honored to be joined by such a beautiful creature. My own waits for me on the ship.
[ All cats are queens!! But Xenk follows, trusting as ever, even as Fenris leads him to a quiet alley. This is fine and normal. This is what friends do. Actually, once they're in private, he's just going to ask. ]
The house is finally official. I signed the papers this evening.
[ He sounds a little giddy, but mostly like he doesn't really believe it. He's gone from owning nothing to having this huge house, which really the dream. It may be a touch on the nose as far as vampires are concerned but really he's thrilled. ]
[He's already on his way the second he gets the address, he was curious what kind of house Astarion bought, plus he is always interested in seeing the elf.]
[ It's a day in late November, after Astarion has obtained his house yet before they acquire a ship and become a proper crew. Sure, Xenk had already fielded the idea, so it's out there, but without a ship they aren't official. Yet.
All that can wait, though. First there's the matter of moving into his new accommodations. Xenk felt honored that Astarion had asked him to join him, and when he arrives at the massive house with a trunk over one shoulder, and a succulent in his left hand, he can only assume that Astarion means to populate this house at some point. It's simply too big not to.
Frostbite meows at his feet as he pushes the door open, dashing into the house to quickly get a lay of the land. As for Xenk, he's not about to bother and ask Astarion to help him with his things. He'll find the room closest to him, if it's available. To be near him. In case he has nightmares, you know.
Frostbite meows again, snapping him out of his thoughts. She looks back at Xenk from the top of the stairs, eyes blue and bright. ]
I am certain Astarion will not object to you making yourself at home.
[ With that she disappears, likely not to be seen for the rest of the day. First Xenk will have to carry his heavy chest up the stairs. Good thing Xenk has that +8 to Strength! ]
[After the talk that Astarion and Fenris had, he cannot help but want to move in as soon as possible. In fact, he had already picked a room close to Astarion so that he could be nearby, perhaps even wake up to that handsome face some mornings. Besides, this giant mansion needed to be filled with more than just the few of them, it was more grand than even the home he had in Kirkwall - if one could call that decrepit, skeleton ridden, hole in the roof mansion a home.
Pumpkin is going to town on her cat tree that he's just set up in his room when he hears the meows of another cat. That wasn't Shadowlily.
Stepping out of the room he looks down the hall but sees no one. Well at first, until he hears the sound of someone coming up the stairs. With that, he makes his way down the hallway to check who it is. Xenk would be his guess as the steps are too heavy with weight and clanky to be Astarion.]
Ah, I see you are moving in as well. Here, let me help you with your belongings.
[Its a joke really, but he does take the Succulent from the man as if he's taking a heavy burden from the other.]
[ Xenk beams to see a familiar face as he climbs up the steps. He cannot say he is surprised to see him, knowing how vital Fenris is to Astarion, and how treasured. It's clear that the many changes Astarion has been through since arriving have allowed him to ask for help, and perhaps even share his affections openly with those he cares about.
All assumptions, of course. Xenk has his own fondness for Fenris, without a doubt. Warmth fills his heart to think that he may get to live surrounded by people he has come to care for. It is a great blessing, whether it be from Tyr or some other god. ]
I am. Astarion was kind enough to ask me to join him here.
[ He hands the potted plant to Fenris and tilts his head in amusement. ]
I am very pleased to see you will live here as well, Fenris.
I only just moved in but maybe ten minutes prior to your arrival. It seems we both made haste after the invitation was given.
[Fenris has a great affection for both Xenk and Astarion. Something akin to love for the latter, something not unlike it for the former. Though he doesn't presume the level of affection each hold for him, only that he trusts his importance to them is the same he holds for them in return. So, instead he keeps his heart open to them both the best he can. He was quite glad with whatever was happening here between himself and these two.]
Come, you likely already know, but Astarion's room is down this hall.
[He feels he knows Xenk well enough to know the man was protective and would likely want to be close to Astarion much the same way Fenris had wanted the same.]
[Wakey wakey, eggs and bakey. Or a package for when you woke up. Inside are a pair of earrings with embedded rubies where the skin eyes are. There is also a bottle with preserved dark red cosmos flowers. Whatever lessons they had, have come to pass. Hopefully he can make this out with his progress.]
[He wonders why he got this, he doesn't see a reason for it, but when he reads the note that comes with it - slowly and with some effort of sounding things outloud - he finds that it's from Daria and for a genuinely kind reason. The dark reds remind him both of Hawke and Astarion, so he keeps them close, setting them on his bedside table.
He sends a short letter back, in a very careful but untrained and unskilled hand:]
[ Xenk knocks on Fenris' door on a chilly winter's morning. The practice of trading gifts isn't something that's hugely popular in the Forgotten Realms, but he's had enough contact with people here to know you're supposed to give gifts to your loved ones.
And Fenris is surely that.
So Xenk actually has two items -- holding one in each hand. In his left is... a jar of oil. With a blue bow on it. Fearing this would be too simple, he has a second present, in his right hand. It's an envelope-sized box along with what is obviously a ream of paper. Also wrapped in a bow. It's festive? He hopes so, at least. ]
[Fenris had gone shopping for solstice gifts for both of his lovers, but he hesitated to give them to them. Not because he thought they were poor gifts, but because he thought perhaps they would not like them. He was used to working off a solstice list, not his own idea of what his lovers might like.
In honestly, he's realizing how little he knows them by doing this. Perhaps he should not rely so heavily on their willingness to impart information and actually ask questions.
When the knock comes to his door, he opens it with a nod, eyeing the things in the man's hands as he steps aside to let him in. Were those gifts?]
[ They make quite the pair, fretting as they were over something meant to simply be a kind gesture. Though Xenk is much better at hiding his concerns and fears by simply barreling through them. He's always an open book, but it's a little hard to read those pages when the book is right in your face, to be fair. ]
Indeed! I am told there is a practice in which one rewards their loved ones with presents as the year draws to its close.
[ He holds them out. ]
I, ah... The oil is for your armor and weapons. I thought to give you something of use, but as gifts go, I thought it plain. Which is why I obtained a second. One you may unwrap.
[Fenris huffs an amused sound at that, because he's not sure how he knows the solstice is to reward your loved ones with a gift, but regardless he will take it. Maybe it was more of a Faerun custom.
He takes the oil first, looking it over with a smile before setting it down and taking the second gift, carefully unwrapping it and looking at what it was. His eyebrows go up at it.]
A calligraphy set? Thank you, I will attempt to do right by it and use it to write more letters. Hopefully I will continue to get better under your tutelage.

We have a similar tradition in Thedas, for the solstice.
